“How can I help people give more of their life away?”

That’s a question that I’ve been wrestling with for the past nine months or so. As a pastor I’m always trying to figure out where the next spot is, spiritually, that I should lead our local church. And the thing I keep coming back to is that we want to love people well and part of loving people well is serving them.

But why ask THAT question at all?

Well, simply put, the measure of a life well lived is not in how much one acquires or accomplishes, it’s in how well one loves.

This past Easter, our church, Two Cities Church, partnered with Action Community Church, the City of Clovis Parks and Recreation Department and the Clovis Police Department to put on the very first church-city Easter event to serve our community. We planned for 3,000 people and ended up with over 2,000.  Enjoy this vlog I put together showing some of the set up, event and tear down process.

Student Impact is our avenue for middle and high school students who want to serve at New Vintage Church. In many ways they are leading the charge on what it looks like to be a great volunteer. They recently filled out a survey about serving and here are some of their answers:

  • “I serve to be a part of something bigger than me”
  • “I feel like I’m not just another helper, but someone who matters”
  • “I serve because helping out prek and seeing the kids learn makes me feel like my life has meaning”
  • “I serve to help the church and to grow”
  • “I feel like a part of a team because I am interacting with everyone-kids and adults and hopefully making an impact on their lives”
  • “Serving has helped me grow closer to God”
  • “I feel like a part of a team because I am really needed.”
  • “I feel like a big part of my team because each week I think some kids feel better with the same people other than unfamiliar faces.”
  • “I feel like a part of a team because everyone works together and it’s a good time”
  • “The kids know me.  They look forward to seeing me and I look forward to seeing them”
  • “I feel a part of the NVC family and wanted to give back and help out my family.”
  • “I feel like a part of the team I serve on because I was an orphan and now I have a family” (this was a 20-something who serves as a small group leader with our middle schoolers)

How are you engaging the next generation?
If you’re an adult at New Vintage… what’s holding you back from being as involved as these students?

Serving Santa Rosa

December 12, 2011 — Leave a comment

Two Saturdays ago, my community group served at a thrift store run by the Gospel Redwood Mission here in Santa Rosa, Ca.
We did yard work, cleaning, moved furniture, separated clothes and rewired a weed-wacker.

One of the couples from our group brought their daughter Emily.
She found a leather jacket and showed us her Michael Jackson moves.

When’s the last time you served?
What did you do?
