When my son, Josiah was born (2009), I started a bedtime ritual with him that I call, “Telling Secrets.” It was a simple idea. I wanted to speak truth into him that would place an anchor in his soul so deep that nothing could move that anchor. Some might call it a North Star or a guiding principle.
Over time, I’ve added to these truths and continued this ritual with all three of our kids and now anybody in our family can recite these things, on command, at any time.
My wife and I both do this. No matter who puts them to sleep, they hear the same things and we pray together. Sometimes they recite them to us… and Brynn has been known to throw in “I can’t wait to see the Grandpa you grow up to be” in the middle.
Here’s a vlog I made about it a few years ago.
God made you.
God loves you.
Jesus wants to be your friend forever.
Love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul mind and strength.
Love others like you love yourself.
Take care of the widows and the orphans and those who can’t take care of themselves.
Act justly, love mercy and walk humbly with your God.
I love you _________, I’m proud of you and I can’t wait to see the man/woman you grow up to be.
Trust God no matter what.
Treat others the way you want to be treated.
And always make the wise choice.
Don’t forget to show honor and respect to others.
And remember, you are uniquely made on purpose for God’s purpose.
